Fall River is located just a short drive outside of Halifax and just north of the Bedford Basin. The area owes its name to a stream that ran between Miller Lake and Thomas Lake. There was a set of waterfalls along this stream that in the early 19th century were used to harness water power for several mills then later used to generate electrical utility in the early 20th century.
The natural beauty of the area’s many lakes and waterways has been added to by the development of a local shopping center in the last decade. The center has provided autonomy to the community’s residents as they are now able to get many grocery products as well as basic services without leaving their community. As a result Fall River has become a shopping hub for many of the smaller communities that find it more convenient than making the traffic laden trip back into the city. This convenience has also led to the areas increase popularity and the construction of several subdivisions (The Schwarzwald , Fall River Village, Capilano, St. Andrews West and Kinloch Estates).
